Australia pours in more aid

 A SCHOOL, church and women’s group are among nine community organisations in Hela receiving almost K630,000 in Australian support for projects that will improve education, health services and empower women.

The organisations received grants through the Strongim Pipol Strongim Nesen programme, a partnership between the governments of Papua New Guinea and Australia funded by AusAID. 

Head of Australian aid in PNG Stuart Schaefer said the communities had identified projects to improve the everyday lives of people.

“Australia is pleased to help these groups turn their plans for better services and opportunities for their people into reality,” Schaefer said.

“They are taking ownership of their own development and are investing in these projects too by contributing 10% of the total costs.” 

In the Hulia local level government area, students will have better access to education and clean water with funding of K77,699 to build a double classroom and a water tank.

Kalet Community Development Group received K72,682 to complete the construction of three classrooms for the Suwaka-Lane Elementary school, in Kopiago district.

The women from the Guala Christian Brethen Church received K75,470 for a resource centre that will support women’s empowerment activities.
