Police nab fourth suspect

POLICE have advised business houses in Port Moresby to seek their help in escorting large sums of money around the city.

It follows the arrest of a fourth employee of a security company tasked with transferring K6.3 million from its base in Konedobu to the Bank of Papua New Guinea in downtown Port Moresby.

National Capital District Metropolitan Commander Supt Andy Bawa said police were following up leads on other suspects and were confident of rounding them up soon.

“I am appealing to business houses in the city that if they want to transport huge sums of money, they must write a letter of request to my office so that we can provide security for them,” he said.

“This is to avoid such cases from happening again.”

Bawa said police were there at all times to provide such help to business houses.

Assistant Police Commissioner  and National Capital District/Central Divisional Commander Jim Andrews said the man arrested was an employee of the G4S security company at their base in Konedobu.

Police said company security officers were escorting the money from its base in Konedobu when the heist took place.   

“The suspect detained is the fourth person so far,” he said. 

“Three other security guards have been detained over the heist.”

Police are questioning the men arrested so far. No charges have been laid yet.

Andrews said police needed the security company to assist in investigations.

“If it means we work all around the clock to nab the suspects, then so be it,” he said.

“The company must help police to fast-track the investigations.

“G4S will help us because they have vital information on their employees that can assist us.”
