FORMER Pomio MP and national planning minister Paul Tiensten, who is currently on parole from the Bomana Correctional Institution, was among 109 University of PNG law students who graduated yesterday.
An emotional Tiensten, who graduated with a bachelor of law, said it was unbelievable to have served his time in prison as well as coming out and studying law.
He said he wouldn’t have come this far if it had not been for his wife Juliet, twin daughters Irene and Isabella and the grace of God.
He said with the challenge of having access to resources and learning materials in prison, he managed to complete his studies with the help of his wife who printed out learning materials for him and the Correctional Service for allowing him to use the internet and a laptop.
“My wife and my kids have been my tower of strength, they have been the bedrock when I was in prison,” Tiensten said.
“I do not hold any grudges or bitterness about the years I was in jail because God took all the anger out of my heart.
Tiensten, while acknowledging the PNG Correctional Services, particularly the former commander for Bomana Chief Supt Hahara Kidi Keko for releasing him to study and said it was part of their corrective measures for rehabilitation of prisoners.

  • If I were Boman CSpt, I would never allow white collar criminals a piece of remorse for a person who sucked and stole from the poor suffering people of PNG. Hundreds and thousands in the rural areas died while you wined and dinned with their monies which would have been better of to purchase medicines and bring them out to better urban hospitals. Maybe God can forgive you but some of use wouldn’t dare mention that word.

  • kanex kannarepa are you jealous of him. Sure he might did something wrong but he has achieved something out from prison. Prison is also a rehabilitation centre and NOT a concentration camp.

    • Kanex Kanarepa – full support of your comments
patrick ikon – you must be a beneficiary of his heartless greedy works.
he earns a degree, and he will continue to steal millions of Kina while all of us PNG country men and women suffer.
Do’nt be a corward like PT, or you must be blind or are you trying to act smart?

  • We should appreciate that he had broken a law, from the broken law, he learned something great by learning the law to improve himself to be better person again in his life & down the life…….

  • PT had admitted his wrong doings and paid the price for them but there are others who deserve to be in there but enjoying a luxury life. He is a free man, he had put to good use his time in prison, congratulations.

  • His people trusted him to represent them and he in turn steals from the people. I wonder how much this Jail Commandant was paid to allow this white collar thief to study law to perfect his stealing habit. And stop calling God’s name, you knew exactly what you were doing.

  • Its unfair to others while such big-name thieves like him are set free just because they can use their money to twist and bend the laws and open doors. Shameless scums!
