ABAU Netball Association are the champions of Papua New Guinea after defeating Port Moresby Netball Association 38-27 in the A-Grade final of the Newcrest National Netball Championships in Goroka on Friday.
Abau and Port Moresby finished on top of Pool A in the senior division with the two sides defeating Pool-B finalists Kairuku-Hiri and Lae respectively in the preliminary finals for a spot in the final.
The final saw Abau take on a young Port Moresby side who were quick to take a 10-7 lead in the first quarter.
Goal-shooter Goloa Ovou gave Abau the upper hand to overcome Port Moresby’s lead in the second quarter of the match with Abau leading 19-14.
The scores opened wide for Abau in the third quarter with Port Moresby finding limited opportunities, resulting in a 35-19 scoreline at the break.
Port Moresby came back hard in the final quarter for a chance at the title but they were unable to chase down a big margin with the match ending in favour of Abau.
Meanwhile, Rigo proved too strong for West New Britain with a 35-17 win in the B-Grade final.
In the Masters division, Abau came out on top with a 21-12 win over Motu-Koita West.
