THE Papua New Guinea Nurses Association is calling on the Government to make information more accessible to the people by subsidising the fees of media products, president Frederick Kebai says.
Kebai said many people were missing out on important updates and information which would enable them to make informed choices to protect themselves from the coronavirus (Covid-19).
He said nurses and people in the rural areas were not getting updates on time.
He said even in towns, people could not afford to get a copy of the newspaper because the lowest price of the two main dailies was K2.
He added that it was not encouraging to see people getting second-hand information from others.
Kebai said if the people were literate then they needed to read for themselves.
“I appeal to the government to subsidise the price of the print media at this time of Covid-19,” he said.
“As part of the Covid-19 response the government must ensure that newspapers are widely circulated and must go down to the village level.”
Kebai said the Government could pay half or three quarters of the price so that the people can get their copies at 50t.
He said having accessing to the right information in an emergency like this was paramount.
