A 60-YEAR-OLD man is in custody at Wau police cells after allegedly sexually touching his five-year-old granddaughter, says Morobe police commander Supt Jacob Singura.
Singura said the incident happened on Monday.
Police apprehended the suspect and he was now in custody waiting to be formally charged before appearing in court.
Wau-Waria never had a family sexual violence unit over the years.
It formally came under the Bulolo district.
According to Singura, violence related to family units had slightly increased in the district but many victims could not get help because of distance, costs involved or because they were afraid to speak out.
“Now that police is planning to set up a family sexual violence unit in the district, it will help the victims, especially the women, children and girls,” he said.
Singura said women and girls could now access the service in Wau as soon as the unit was set up in the district.
He said that liquor ban for an indefinite period was still in force and that had seen Wau town being cleared of drunkards.
The town was now quiet and peaceful, and citizens had to maintain that even if the liquor ban was to be lifted in future.
Meanwhile, Wau police station commander Senior Insp Peter Yambun said he was happy with the announcement of Wau-Waria having its own family sexual violent unit.
“We have many unreported cases of violence within family units and with this unit about to be set up, I am confident that victims will be encouraged to come forward to expose the perpetrators so that the law could deal with them,” he said.
Yambun urged victims not to let these serious matters went without reporting the perpetrators as keeping the wrongdoer only encouraged more of such issues within family units and communities.
