ACTING Prime Minister Sam Abal says public institutions  lack good administration and management.
“They need a huge improvement,” he said as guest of honour last Friday at the 43rd graduation of the University of Technology in Lae in which 860 students received their degrees in the science, engineering, accounting and business management, agriculture and forestry.
He urged Unitech students, academics and administrators to improve the quality of their attitude and work to meet global standards.
Abal also said that Minister for Higher Education Paru Aihi would be visiting Unitech in two weeks to take stock of Unitech’s needs and report to the government.
He added Unitech’s infrastructure and roads would also be refurbished with funding of nearly K2.5 million.
And he also announced that Unitech would benefit from a K150,000 satellite project that was the initiative of Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare to set up a remote sensing satellite dish to enhance learning and research and development.
It would be set up in conjunction with the University of Papua New Guinea, Indian Space Research Organisation and the Department of Prime Minister and NEC.
He said that the higher institutions’ need administration and management need to do the job well with quality leadership.
“This indeed is the pivotal factor why there are some many deficiencies in our public universities and colleges. They need proper management and supervision,” he said.
“Otherwise, staff must be appropriately trained and qualified to occupy these responsible jobs on which other people’s future depend.
“Governance of the university depends on the leadership from the governing council.”
