Steven was in the province for the 70th Anniversary of the Gut Nius Lutheran Church.
In a short briefing with the contractor, Guangdong Foreign Construction Company Limited, it was revealed that the first phase of the K150 million-plus project was underway.
Work on the foundation of the main outpatient, accident and emergency unit, paediatric and other clinics including wards had already begun.
Steven thanked the construction company and the Chinese government for their continued support to development in Papua New Guinea through funding from the Exim Bank of China.
“The National Government is committed to ensure the project is delivered on time (2021) and according to budget,” Steven said.
“This is a priority project and we will be helping as far as funding is concerned.
“I just want to make sure that you are aware that we have standards, especially where hospitals are concerned.
“We want you to ensure that those standards are met and complied with so that together we can deliver this important project.”
