THE advancement in technology innovation and global private operators in the logistics industry has resulted in the poor financial performance for Post PNG in recent years, according to a consumer watchdog. Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) commissioner and chief executive officer Paulus Ain said that the use of postage stamps and letter boxes declined due to the increased use of advanced communication technologies such as email, mobile telephony and internet telephony and social media.
“This has contributed to the decrease in the letter volumes and revenues of Post PNG,” he said.
Post PNG Ltd chief executive officer Peter Tepure said the ICCC was currently reviewing the Postal Services Act to determine whether it was still an essential service.
The ICCC regulates a standard letter (50g or less) domestic letter stamps, a standard letter (50g or less) international letter stamps and rental of private letter boxes and bags.
