THE EsiLoan Port Moresby AFL competition matches resume this weekend after two-week break.
The competition matches were put off from June 2-10 to allow for maintenance work to be completed at the Colts Oval.
AFLPNG football manager Rex Leka said that the resumption of matches tomorrow would coincide with the start of women’s matches.
Leka said only four teams would take part in this year’s women’s competition with the Bomana Cats and Gerehu Magpies out.
“We’ve got Dockers, Koboni, North Waigani Royals Tigers and Gordon Kokofas to contest the women’s premiership won by Koboni last year,” Leka said.
He said the women’s matches would kick off on Sunday with reigning premiers Koboni taking on the Tigers in the main match at 1pm while the Kokofas would battle out the first match with Dockers at 11am.
Meanwhile, the Gerehu Magpies senior men’s team has been relegated to the reserve grade meaning that the ‘Pies would only have a reserve grade team competing for the rest of this season.
“This means that any senior grade team drawn against the ‘Pies for the weekend matches would have a bye as in the case with Gereka for Sunday’s draw,” said Leka.
Leka said that the decision to relegate the Magpies was unanimously agreed to by the club delegates of Port Moresby AFL Association in a league meeting on June 5.
“This decision was unanimously agreed to by all club delegates to save Magpies from further humiliation and stop stronger teams gaining hefty percentage boost at the expense of the Magpies.”
This weekend’s match of the round sees the lion-hearted young Bomana Cats taking on the ladder leaders West Eagles tomorrow at 3pm in a match that should go either way with both teams possessing the ability to play attacking football and pile on points.
In the earlier match tomorrow, the star-studded Koboni should return to the winners’ circle at expense of the Tigers, who have yet to display endurance football.
In Sunday’s main match, the Gordon Kokofas who beat Koboni three weeks ago must beat the Dockers to live up to their “giant killers” tag.
The task might easier said than done but if the Lizards stick to their game plan and play coordinated football without losing their cool, they should trouble the Dockers.
