AFL Papua New Guinea on Saturday restarted its junior development programmes in Hula, Central, after four months following the Covid-19 pandemic.
AFLPNG Southern manager, junior development, David Topeni said the restart was a success, and the programmes would be rolled out to schools and junior competitions in the country.
“It’s been a very long stop to our work and to resume here is great because we had good turnout from children here in Hula,” he said.
“This is good sign for junior development in the country.
“It’s a good start for us here in Hula leading up to school competitions and clinics.
“We haven’t been able to do much since the Covid-19 lockdown and this is the first for us to get out again so we’re also restarting our programmes alongside the Port Moresby AFL season launch.
“We ran the programme here for one day only but the interest from the children and the families here has made this a successful event.
“We will now be preparing for our school programmes.
“We will also consider our Covid-19 guidelines and how best we can run the programmes.
“We’ll start our clinics before moving onto the junior competitions.”
He said despite no international matches for the junior teams because of the pandemic, AFLPNG would still continue its training programmes in the country.
