THE Constitutional and Law Reform Commission (CLRC) has assisted villages in Barakau, Central and Siassi in Tewai-Siassi, Morobe, with nearly 8,000 national identification (NID) cards and birth certificates since 2016.
This was after CLRC delivered the remaining 178 NID cards and 253 birth certificates for Siassi villagers to the Lae NID office last week for collection by the owners, CLRC secretary Dr Mange Matui said.
“We are proud to assist in ensuring the availability of these important legal identification documents for the villagers who otherwise would have found difficulty getting these themselves,” he said.
Over 2,000 participants registered under this initiative from 2016 to 2018, but Matui said that the identification documents for many were unsuccessful due to technical issues on data collection and printing causing delay.
“The project was also carried out in a multi-sectorial approach with the involvement of other public agencies who shared resources to simultaneously undertake other important activities relevant to those agencies.”
Matui thanked the secretary for the Department of Justice and attorney general Dr Eric Kwa for initiating the project and the relevant government partners including the PNG Civil and Identity Registry for their support.
