The National Library and Archives and its partners will try to revive and restore libraries that are closed.
Speaking at the launching of the 2016 National Book Week, National Library and Archives director-general Kakaito Kasi said all public libraries in the country should be open by 2025.
“We want to ensure that every district in the country has a library,” Kasi said.
He said they also wanted to ensure that library and archives services were delivered to the public effectively and fairly.
Kasi said they would work with their partners, including the Department of Provincial and Local Level Governments, to have libraries in districts active.
The department’s acting Secretary Dickson Guina said they were developing minimum standards for all districts and LLGs.
“We want to make sure that our children in the districts and communities have a better place in terms of learning so that they are able to learn well,” Guina said.
He said they were now working with the Department of National Planning to develop service delivery.
“Our people in every district can have access to all services like hospitals, schools, banks and, of course, libraries,” Guina said.
He commended the Government for making free education in public schools a priority.
