THE Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) has supported and funded many projects in Papua New Guinea and one of them is the Port Moresby sewerage system upgrading system (POMSSUP) in Joyce Bay, Moresby South.
The K26 million plant is the only state of the art sewerage facility in the country and was funded under the Yen loan project.
The project was implemented by Kumul Consolidated Holdings, the engineers in charge were from NJS Consultants and the operator was Eda Ranu.
Aloysius Aihi, who is the treatment plant manager, thanked the Japanese government, through Jica which had facilitated the project.
“Through this project, we have created a miniature nature park for the people along the coast of Joyce Bay and they use that to enjoy nature and conduct their fishing, swimming and recreational activities in a clean environment,” he said.
Prior to the project, raw sewerage was being discharged into the sea via the 13 discharge points along the coast of Moresby South.
“The beach was filthy due to raw sewerage being discharged over the years but when the project commenced in 2016, there was an environmental change and the beach is now clean for the people,” Aihi said.
