Agility, height a must for Kumuls

Letters

SINCE we will be participating in the rugby league World Cup many players from overseas and in the country will be putting their hands up for a place in the Kumuls squad.
Here is my pick for the Kumuls: David Mead, Bland Abavu, Nene McDonald, Israel Eliap, Alex Johnson, Ray Thomson, Ase Boas, Wellington Albert, James Segeyaro, Stanton Albert, Henry Wan, Luke Page and Rod Griffin. Reserves: Stargoth Amean, Ryse Martin, Tommy Butterfield, Willie Minoga, and Richard Pandia.
This team will be strong in two of the areas that we are weak in – agility and height.
We should use our skills. Over the years, as we play Australia and New Zealand we have always been overwhelmed because we lack mobility – the ability to get up quickly to play the ball or to defend from the tackle.
In addition, the players from other countries are taller, on average, than most Papua New Guinea players. Thus when we are tackling around the mid-area they are already off-loading the ball in the tackle, even though we are tackling three-to-one.
If the team mentioned above cannot be considered, the next Kumuls team must have players who are tall and can match the other teams, at least, in height.
The forward pack must be agile so that they can keep up with the modern intensity of the game.
Bear in mind that this is a World Cup and the Kumuls will be rubbing shoulders with the best players in the world.
