PAPUA New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with United States Embassy and PNG Tribal Foundation recently to build a statue to honour a legendary woman solo aviator and launch a scholarship for women in science and technology.
The Amelia Earhart’s statue would mark the 85th anniversary of her disappearance and her 125th birth anniversary. The scholarship would enhance women and girl’s knowledge in science and technology.
University acting vice chancellor Dr Gary Sali, said: “The Papua New Guinea University of Technology is proud to provide a way not only to honour this brave woman, but to create a lasting partnership between the United States and Papua New Guinea that began 125 years ago in 1937.”
Head of public affairs from the US Embassy Damian Wampler said: “We hope that this memorial, and the scholarship fund, will motivate women and men, students, faculty, and staff in Lae to push the boundaries of science and technology.”
