THE Government’s support of K1 million for beekeepers in the Highlands will significantly boost the sector, an agriculturalist says.
Western Highlands agriculture coordinator Rex Wandi said this was a positive sign for the honey farming industry and should encourage more people to take up bee keeping and farming.
He said Prime Minister James Marape and Agriculture and Livestock Minister John Simon were looking to boost local honey production which had not received much government support over the years.
Wandi said the K1 million funding under the Government’s agriculture intervention programme was used to purchase a vehicle, 72 beehives and 11 honey extractors and presented to the apiculture industry in Goroka last Friday.
Wandi, who has 34 years of experience in agriculture, said this was the first time the government made an effort to help the industry.
