WORLD Food Day was celebrated at Gordon market in the National Capital District yesterday with local vendors coming together with United Nations  Women’s PNG office, the National Capital District Commission and the Department of Agriculture and Livestock (DAL) to promote locally grown produce as part of the Safe Cities programme.
The Safe Cities Programme funded by NZ Aid addresses the issues relating to safety and people’s ability to access fresh food products in marketplaces.
Kay Kaugla, gender desk officer, NCDC said: “Papua New Guinea is blessed in that it has a great abundance of food.
“In this market place alone we have 5,000 different varieties of food; from corn to sugar cane, pumpkin and fruits. There are many countries out there less fortunate, where people are starving.”
The official World Food Day theme gives focus to World Food Day observances and raises awareness and understanding of approaches to ending hunger.
“Agricultural cooperatives – key to feeding the world” is the formal wording of the 2012 theme. It was chosen to highlight the role of co-operatives in improving food security and contributing to the eradication of hunger.
