AGRICULTURE remains the principal economic activity which provides a livelihood for 85 per cent of the rural population, a senior official says.
Department of Agriculture and Livestock secretary Daniel Kombuk said recently that the rural population relied directly on subsistence farming for their basic needs as they did not have direct access to government funding and their voices needed to be heard.
“The seven million plus population of farmers who rely on agriculture for their daily sustenance in PNG, whose voices often go unheard must be heard,” Kombuk said.
“They need to be heard at both the policy and implementation levels if we are to realise the dream of empowering PNG’s economy through agriculture.”
“Farmers are struggling to sustain their livelihood and work hard but access to government money is not easy.”
