THE recommendation by the PNG Accidents Investigation Commission to amend the quick reference handbook checklist in the cockpit of the ATR aircraft is expected to be used by operators worldwide.
The commission’s investigation team had also recommended that the Air Vanuatu Operations Ltd provide adequate flight and cabin crew training on the execution of emergency procedures.
It was one of the three safety recommendations for aircraft manufacturer ATR to ensure checklists could draw the attention of the flight crew to take appropriate safety action.
Chief Commissioner Hubert Namani said the investigation into the Air Vanuatu ATR 72-500 aircraft accident at Port Vila last year was in accordance with the PNG Civil Aviation Act 2000 and the Convention on International Civil Aviation.
The accident happened on July 28, 2018, when an Avions de Transport Regional ATR72-500 operated by Air Vanuatu Operations Ltd was on a scheduled passenger flight from Whitegrass Airport, Tanna, to Bauerfield International Airport, Port Vila – a distance of 117 nautical miles (217km).
During the landing the aircraft veered off the runway and collided with two unoccupied Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander aircraft in the apron area.
