FUEL shortage faced by police in Northern province is being looked at by the force headquarters, a source close to Commissioner Tom Kulunga said yesterday.
Police in Northern raised their concern on Monday after they could not attend to complaints because their vehicles had no fuel.
“This is an internal issue and arrangements are made to have fuel supplied to the local police,” the source said.
He said funds were given to each province on a monthly basis.
He declined to say how much was given to each province.
He said the money only became available when it was released to police headquarters by the finance department.
“Provincial police commanders must not cry in the media but organise themselves with whatever they have,” he said.
The source said that everything done at the headquarters went through processes and took time.
He said there were different people dealing with different aspects of the processes.
Therefore things need to go to their attention before it gets an approval.
He said the problem was unique to Northern as other centres were operating well.
He said the K56,000 bill owed to a hire car company by the police in Northern was their prerogative as they were given funds to run police operations in the province.
“You ask the PPC again if the headquarters is responsible for the bill,” the source said.
