Commerce and Industry Minister Henry Amuli says the National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology (Nisit) Act 1993 is being reviewed to improve the enforcement of quality standards on imported goods.
Amuli said the quality and prices of goods were affecting the livelihoods of people, especially imported goods.
“Nisit is responsible for developing standards for products and services in the country, but it is concerning to see that many low quality products flooding into our markets,” he said.
Amuli said the Nisit Act did have provisions to address the issue, but did not have the “explicit regulatory power when it comes to enforcement of standards”.
Amuli said consumer behaviour was an issue, saying people preferred cheaper products.
He said there were plans to impose necessary penalties on goods and producers who do not meet quality standards.
“These quality standards shall apply to producers and factory houses within the country as well,” Amuli said.
