Ain welcomes appointment, focuses on consumer protection

REAPPOINTED Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) commissioner and chief executive officer Paulus Ain aims to focus on aligning all legislation relating to consumer protection.
Ain was reappointed by the National Executive Council (NEC) for the next five years.
“I am willing to carry on from where I stopped and will continue to support the Government to take back PNG by ensuring our markets are competitive, that consumers are well protected and that there is regulatory compliance by the regulated industries and entities,” he said.
“Different Government agencies and departments seem to have their own consumer protection functions and I think this is not serving our consumers well.
“We need to realign and centralise it.
“For example, the Food Sanitations Act, which deals with all food related issues, rests with the Department of Health while the consumer issues relating to finance is with the Bank of PNG, and information communications technology consumer related issues are with National Information and Communication Technology Authority (Nicta).
“The ICCC has been struggling with this and related issues so we will be working with these agencies and departments so we have consumer protection centralised.
“On behalf of my family and the people of Jiwaka, I would like to thank the Marape Government for having confidence in me by reappointing me as commissioner to serve our consumers and the business community for the next five years.”
The decision was made official by National Gazette No. G669 of Oct 6.

  • ICCC needs to look seriously into and ‘maybe’ ban the influx of all imports of fake and cheap sub-standard Chinese products that are currently flooding the PNG market. PNG is not China’s waste dump.#TakebackPNG

  • Ain hasn’t been doing a good job in protecting the interests of Papua New Guineans so I don’t think he will make any difference upon his re-appointment. For example, he has been either turning a blind eye or maybe for some reason he has allowed Bismillah Holdings to monopolize the supermarket/grocery trade in the central Gerehu area for some time now. They have four shopping centers, a hardware, a liquor takeaway shop, a furniture shop, a fuel station all under different trading names within the compound to fool people like Ain into believing the the opposite. We nee ICCC to step up for the sake of our poor people!

  • If Ain can be reappointed a ICCC boss then why can’t it be the same to Ray Paul be reappointed as Custom’s Commissioner? Is the government fair or there is nepotism here. Regionalism is very bad for this nation.

  • Reappoint a ICCC boss is a great. To this Government. Mr Ain know were top stop.and he can continue the work he as down for last five years. For the last five years was very well job done, under leadership of MrAin as a ICCC.We believe he can work with this Government to take PNG back.

  • Congratulations Mr. Ain for your reappointment. It is the current government’s confidence in you that enabled your reappointments for the next term of office. All the best ICCC, consumer watchdog em yupla ya.
