AIR Niugini has beefed up security at all its facilities in response to last week’s civil unrest in Port Moresby and parts of Papua New Guinea.
Acting chief executive officer Gary Seddon told The National that safety and the well-being of its employees had always remained a top priority.
“We have bolstered our security measures at all our facilities including airports, offices and around and on our aircrafts,” Seddon said.
“This includes increased security personnel and ongoing coordination with the local authorities.
“Our dedicated employees are the backbone of Air Niugini, and their safety is of utmost importance.
“We have provided guidance and support to ensure our employees can make informed decisions about their own safety while carrying out their duties.”
Seddon said the unrest and its impact on the nation was a concern.
“It was indeed a sad day for our proud nation.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected by these terrible events and we strongly condemn the unacceptable behaviour of those who harmed innocent citizens and damaged properties,” the airline boss said.
“We are reassured that the situation has improved and is returning to peace and normality as a result of the steps being taken.”
On PX flights and services, Seddon said Air Niugini would maintained its operations and would continue to serve its passengers during this tragic times.
He said air travel for both domestic and international passengers was important and the airline would continue to provide safe and reliable services.
He also assured the travelling public that the airline management and staff were in close consultation with relevant authorities, including the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and local law enforcement agencies on developments.
