AIRLINES PNG has earned a silver rating for its basic aviation risk standard (BARS).

This was announced by the airline yesterday.

The BAR standard was developed by mining resource companies and the Flight Safety Foundation to establish a common safety audit standard for aviation suppliers to the resource industry.

It provided industry companies with the level of safety assurance they required, measured against very stringent standards.

Only eight audit companies worldwide were approved to perform BARS audits.

BARS member companies include Newcrest Mining, Barrack Gold, Leighton, Xstrata, BHP Billiton and International SOS.

APNG chief executive Muralee Siva said: “As Airlines PNG has significant operations within the resource sector for both charter and scheduled passenger services, we are delighted that our work on our safety programmes and internal processes has been recognised.”

The “silver standard” recognised that the airline had been successful over a two-year period in satisfying the required standards in safety compliance

Airlines PNG operates a fleet of 14 Dash -8 aircraft and had recently opened up new routes to Manus, Buka and Kavieng in addition to increased services linking other key domestic ports.
