MAJOR rehabilitation work to upgrade and expand the Nadzab International Airport 40km outside Lae will begin in 2012, Civil Aviation Minister Puri Ruing told parliament.
Ruing said 22 other airports were included in the Asian Development Bank loan facility for rehabilitation.
He said the Nadzab airport (terminal and surrounding facilities) was one of the airports covered under the ADB loan programme.
Ruing said others included Hoskins, Kundiawa, Boram and Vanimo.
“For Nadzab, there are plans for a full upgrade, extension and expansion,” he said.
He said procurement processes had been completed and work should begin soon.
“Hopefully in the first week of the New Year we will see some work.”
Ruing was responding to questions from Tewai-Siassi MP Vincent Michaels on Nadzab, West New Britain Governor Peter Humphreys on Hoskins and Chimbu Governor Fr John Garia on Kundiawa.
