Patrick Aisa and Tutizamana Tanito were on target as Hekari United beat Eastern Stars 2–1 to advance to the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League grand final.
Despite a spirited performance by the Stars, Aisa and Tanito scored a goal each at the Papua New Guinea Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Saturday.
The Southern Conference winners, coached by Solomon Islander Jerry Allan, now advance to the June 1 grand final.
Undefeated so far this season, Hekari were held scoreless in the first half.
The Stars, guided by Under-17 national coach Anthony Pakakota, dominated the first half and were rewarded with a goal in the 22nd minute through midfielder Ian Paia.
After the break, the Stars came out strong but were unable to prevent Aisa from scoring in the 54th minute.
Two minutes later, Tanito struck again for Hekari and the Stars were playing catch-up football thereafter.
The newcomers to the semi-professional competition were unable to contain Hekari despite having the experience of Andrew Lepani.
Hekari kept close watch on the Stars until the final whistle, sending the Reds’ supporters into jubilation.
Pakakota congratulated Hekari for making it through to the grand final.
Pakakota said they had learnt a lot from the first year in the competition, adding that the Stars would come back stronger next season.
“Congratulations to the Hekari for being competitive and putting in a strong performance to win both legs of the home-and-away series,” he said.
“This is a stepping stone for us to come back stronger and more competitive next season.”
Allan praised the Stars for pushing them throughout the series.
