PORT Moresby Suburban Sports Association (PMSSA) chairman Billy Aki has called on Bomana Police College to allow the local off-season rugby league competition to resume.
He made the request after the college had stopped the use of its field for sports.
Aki said in the North East electorate, Bomana and Erima off-season competitions had provided an opening for their youths to play at Bomana Police College from October to December while Morata, Hohola, Kaugere and Konedobu ran their competitions at venues such as the Sir Hubert Murray stadium grounds, Kaugere rugby league field, Ipi Park and  Kone Tigers field.
Others have begun their off-season sports like soccer, rugby league.
But Bomana has suspended its competition indefinitely due to the field undergoing extensive development.
Aki was concerned that the Christmas period was a very volatile time of the year where crime rates increased.
And social problems  caused by youths who had nothing to do needed to be controlled and managed and prevented.
It is activities like sports that play a significant role in keeping youths preoccupied.
“I would like to appeal to the management and staff of Bomana Police College to let the games continue for the benefit of the youths.
“It will only be for the remaining two months and then we will move on to the proper season in which we already have other venues secured,” Aki said after learning that Bomana had cancelled its games for the last two weekends.
Aki said if the work on the oval were to be done immediately, then they would find other avenues to cater for the residents of the North East electorate.
“I might use the Unagi oval to host the Bomana’s off-season games but I am appealing again for the police hierarchy to allow the competition to run,” he said.
Aki said he learned that the Bomana field would be upgraded for other use but he was hopeful that the Bomana off-season competition could still use the venue until work actually started.
