Amity Alarcos proved to be an aspiring athlete when she ousted top seed Kaci Newman at the North Queensland Junior Squash tournament last year.
Alarcos, who turned 14 on Feb 3, earned a spot as one of the nominees of the junior female athlete of the year at the SP Sports Awards after she reached the grand final against Australian junior representative Kurstyn Mather.
But Mather won 3-0, forcing Alarcos to settle for second.
Alarcos, who is a Grade 9 student at St Joseph’s International Catholic College, is a member of the Port Moresby Racquets Club.
Club squash director Merlyn Kriebisch congratulated Alarcos for being shortlisted for the honour.
“Amity’s family and friends are proud of her progress so far, and we hope she continues this path to the world circuit one day,” Kriebisch said.
Kriebisch hailed Alarcos for placing second in the U17 division at last year’s tournament.
“Amity also took part in the U15 division and she delivered outstanding performances against her North Queensland opponents,” Kriebisch said.
“Amity managed to get through to the semifinals, but went down 3-0. She finished third in the U15 girls category.”
Kriebisch said the country’s top player and coach Madako Suari was pleased with Alarcos’ development.
“Amity was shortlisted for the award through hard work and her talent did not go unnoticed,” Kriebisch said.
