A Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) soldier is being investigated for seriously attacking a woman in Port Moresby last Friday.
The woman victim passed away on Sunday and her body had been taken to the morgue at Port Moresby General Hospital.
The soldier, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, approached the deceased’s home last Friday at Four Mile Works Compound, according to information gathered by police.
It was reported that the soldier allegedly attacked the woman’s son outside their home while she was inside the house sleeping.
Police in a statement yesterday said the woman, who had been awakened by the noise outside, went out and found her son being beaten up by the soldier.
Police said the deceased approached the soldier and her son and stopped them. Following her intervention, the soldier attacked her from behind as she was walking back to the house with her son.
Police Criminal Investigation Division (CID) had received a report, and they were looking into it, according to commander NCD and central, assistant commissioner of police Anthony Wagambie Jr.
ACP Wagambie said the victim, Roselyn Peter, 45, from Chuave in Chimbu, suffered major injuries as a result of the suspect’s claimed assault.
According to her relatives, she was given painkillers at home after being assaulted.
He said that she passed away on Sunday morning.
He said police were notified of her passing and CID officers went to the residence and helped to take the body to the mortuary.
Wagambie said that statements and other relevant information had been gathered and that the police already knew who the alleged soldier was.
He said since the incident concerned a soldier, military police would collaborate with police to conduct an investigation to ascertain the facts.
