A MAGISTRATE has warned a 64-year-old man who allegedly raped a 12-year-old girl two years ago in Port Moresby to honour his bail conditions.
Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Danny Wakikura told Nicholas Iburo from Mou village in Bereina, Central, that he had explained his reasons for not attending court previously.
Wakikura said Iburo had missed his court dates several times and a warrant of arrest was imposed.
“This is a continuous case in the Committal Court, those who are charged must honour their bail conditions and appear in court on dates and times given,” he said.
Iburo told the court that the reason for his non-attendance was on medical grounds.
Wakikura told Iburo that a letter should have been written informing the court about his illness for the court records and, therefore, this was a breach of bail condition.
He then adjourned the matter to May 18, ordered Iburo to attend the court at all times and extended his K1,000 bail.
Police claim that the victim and her mother lived in the same house as Iburo and his relatives.
Between Aug 1, 2020, and Oct 20, 2021, police said Iburo had sexually abused the victim on multiple occasions in the house.
Iburo was alleged to have exposed himself to the victim, took her into his room and raped her.
On the morning of Oct 19, 2021, police alleged that Iburo held the victim and pushed her against a refrigerator and raped her. Iburo was later arrested and charged with sexual penetration of a minor.
