Alumita loves building

Education

Pursue what you want to do, not something forced on you by your culture, says Alumita Chan.
Chan, 25, graduated from the University of Technology with a bachelor of building with merit.
“I’ve always loved buildings, as a kid,” she said.
“Buildings and colors fascinated me.
“So being a creative person motivated to me to choose this course.”
Chan left her family in Kokopo to further her education in Lae.
“But I trusted God in everything and he helped me overcome the challenges I faced in uni life,” she said.
Chan chose the building stream under the department of architecture and management – one of two females in a class of 10.
“It’s more of a professional career where you become a project manager or a construction manager, managing the resources and human resource,” Chan said.
The five-year-long course saw her return from field experience, motivated to prioritise things in her life.
Her advice to young women was to pursue their passion; Chan secured a job with Steamships trading company to start next January.
“In the next five years, I would like to be the next CEO of Steamships trading company,” she said.
