Angoram returning officer to stand trial over graft

National

A COMMITTAL Court has committed the Angoram Open 2022 General Election (GE2022) returning officer (RO) John Kambak to be tried in the National Court over corruption and abuse of office.
Magistrate Francis Fingu, at a committal court in Wewak, East Sepik, yesterday, said there was enough evidence on the charges against Kambak.
Magistrate Fingu said he had considered the submissions from Kambak’s lawyer Vitus Jim as well as the police prosecution.
He said Jim had filed an application to strike out the case but the application had no sufficient grounds.
It was before that court that Kambak was appointed as the Angoram Open RO for and his appointment was gazetted on June 29.
Police alleged that Kambak did not conduct the election properly and allegedly abused the process while he was given the responsibility.
Magistrate Fingu after committing Kambak, set February next for him to appear in the National Court, further extending his bail.
