SPORTS clubs in Angoram, East Sepik, are calling on the Angoram district development authority (DDA) to explain the delay in the construction of the Angoram Mini stadium.
Kapakio Sports Association club captain Aron Maiam said the initial work on the stadium started in 2020 but worked had stopped soon after and the venue was yet to be completed.
“Angoram DDA must come out clear and explain the reason for the delay in construction,” he said.
“The initial ground work began in 2020 and since then everything stopped up till the present.”
The proposed stadium was planned to be constructed on the portion of land where the Angoram soccer field was located.
The stadium was a gift from to the people of Angoram by the national government in recognition of late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, who is from Angoram.
Maiam said the sports was one of the social activities that kept the youth busy and engaged in worthwhile activities and away from disruptive and negative behaviour.
“Angoram has law and order problems mostly caused by our youths but through sports they can unite,’’ he said.
Maiam said the number of youths in Angoram had increased and there was a need to provide opportunities in education, social activities such as sports which would have a positive effect on them.
He said East Sepik would host the ninth PNG Games in 2028 and they need to prepare in advance to participate in the games.
Maiam added that various contractors had been engaged since the mini stadium project was launched but work had not been carried out on the venue since 2020 and the field was overgrown with grass and waterlogged with no further work done after.
