Announcement a great relief

Letters

THE announcement by Works Minister Michael Nali in Parliament last week of K5 million for the bypass and reconstruction of Banap Bridge is a great relief to the people of Bogia, Sumkar and Madang.
Thank you Sumkar MP Chris Nangoi, Madang leaders and other national leaders who have helped out with this issue.
Limited funds are given for both bypass and bridge reconstruction so all Madang leaders must work together to ensure normalcy and free travel.
One of the issues of attitude pointed out by Nali – which is shameful and disrespectful – is local youths of Banap charging fees on innocent citizens.
This is something not expected of coastal people, despite it being a common practice in other parts of the country.
It does not reflect our famous slogan: Beautiful and Peaceful Madang.
Our tradition and culture teaches us to respect, love and care.
Modern ways have robbed us of these values and principles in life.
Imagine if there is another bridge collapse in Madang.
The precedence and attitude have been set and locals will do the same thing.
Those charging fees at Banap Bridge will soon get a taste of their own medicine.
This kind of attitude in Madang must stop to show our love for our country and province.
I urged our local and provincial leaders to take this point seriously.
Come up with strategies to change the way people think and behave these days.
