THE annual National Capital District Governor’s Cup rugby league tournament has expanded over the years and this year a total of 54 teams are in the race for the K20,000 grand prize.
Officials of the tournament have confirmed that they have extended the number of teams participating to 54 from 32. Tournament director Bosky Koke said since it was a Christmas event for all the city youths, they decided to accept the 22 additional teams that had shown interest to be part of the fun during the festive season.
Koke said so far, his management had run the games without any disturbance in the past three days of the regular rounds.
He said since Kone Tigers Oval at Waigani was not enough to cater for all the teams, he spoke to the Port Moresby South rugby league management to use their two ovals and they have agreed to stage games.
“Out of the 54 teams, 34 had their games in Kaugere while the remaining 20 teams had their games here at Kone Tigers,” he said.
He said all teams were placed in eight pools and each team has to play three games.
“The first two teams in each pool automatically qualify for the cup playoff while the third placed team qualifies for the bowl playoff.”
Koke said their regular rounds ended on Monday and he has given three days off to the teams that have qualified for the playoffs to prepare themselves for the finals.
“The finals start on Friday and I am hoping to complete the tournament this Sunday,” Koke said.
