Apec and confused NCD resident

Letters

The organisers of the Apec Leader’s Summit in Port Moresby next month have not clearly told the people of the city and visitors what they can and cannot do and when and where the events will take place.
It has been said that the leaders will be accompanied by their security guards who will be armed and allowed to shoot to kill should their leader come under any threat.
It is therefore important that we who live in Port Moresby be told of the programme, what to expect and what to avoid as we go about our daily activities, like marketing, shopping and whatever we choose to do under the sun.
Our culture and way of life is different from those of those who will be here for Apec. In short, they don’t understand us.
What if one us smiles and walks up to them to observe and maybe shake hands with them and then they decide to fire on us because they misinterpret our motive? What then? What do we do?
It is important that we be told which roads will be closed to the public and which areas in the city will be out of bounds?
Will public transport and airline flights be affected? Will shops be allowed to operate?
When will restrictions be imposed and what restrictions will be imposed on the public?
How will the Apec conference affect our day-to-day schedule?
The conference is only two to three weeks away and as city residents we can only speculate on how it will affect us.
The Apec organisers should get out their loud hailers and visit public markets, settlements, shopping centres, radio stations and start creating awareness.
It is a matter of common sense and courtesy on their part.
We as residents of this city deserve to know what part we are to play in this conference.
