AN Apec driver charged with stealing a laptop from the International Conventional Centre in Port Moresby last week was granted bail by the Waigani Committal Court yesterday.
Gerry Kaka, from Port Moresby, was charged with one count of stealing.
Kaka worked as a driver and a clerk for the Apec 2018 team when he committed the offence.
Police alleged that “Kaka walked out of the centre with a laptop bag carrying a Dell Latitude Laptop”.
“When the superior (name not mentioned in court) realised that the laptop was missing, he called Kaka,” police said.
“Kaka returned the laptop the next day and was arrested and charged.”
In asking for bail, defence lawyer Jack Pupu, of the Gibson Bond Lawyers, said Kaka had four children aged between six months and 12 years and he was the only bread winner in the family.
Pupu said the children suffered when Kaka was in the cell.
The prosecution said Kaka had no permanent residential address and when he was being questioned he had given three different locations as resident and was therefore unlikely to return to court if released.
Magistrate Cosmas Bidar granted bail for K500 and ordered:

  • That Kaka attend court for his case on the dates and times the court appointed;
  • That he remained in the National Capital District at all times until the completion of his case; and
  • He should not commit any serious offence while on bail.

The case was adjourned to Aug 24.
