SONG writers and artistes must write and sing more decent songs instead of songs portraying gender (women) and sexuality, an official says.
Office of Censorship chief censor Jim Ambani said some songs had lyrics which were sexual in nature and referenced sex.
“The languages you use must be acceptable by the people,” he said.
“You cannot bring something that will degrade our morals.
“People are saying that we are trying to suppress the artistes in terms of music.
“But we want decency in their songs.
“Papua New Guineans want to listen to decent songs.”
Ambani said the community development and spiritual pillar six of Vision 2050 talked about the need to regulate the music industry or the gender discriminatory songs that were produced.
“That is why in order to arrive to that Vision 2050, we need to fix things while we are going,” he said.
“We must fix that before people will be starting to sing about women, women and women.”
Ambani said the Office of Censorship would be hosting a workshop and invite musicians and tell them the importance of their songs and what they should be singing about.
“We have already set up the guidelines on what they are supposed to be making composition of instead of making references to sex or sexual behaviours and all this,” he said. “That indecent information reaching the younger generation is bad and as the chief censor, that is one of my priorities to get the music regulations to be put in place.”
Ambani also called on radio stations and announcers who were using obscene language that there were children listening to these stations and they needed to understand the impact of the language they used.
