BIOSECURITY officers are monitoring the area around the Townsville Port, Australia, for dangerous Asian Honey bees after a number of the insects were found on a ship.
The bees were exterminated on board the ship from Papua New Guinea, which docked in Townsville last Friday.
Asian honey bees attack native species and were first detected in Cairns in 2007.
Australia’s department of agriculture, fisheries and forestry spokesman Tim Chapman said there was still a small chance some of the insects were in the area surrounding the Townsville Port.
“The potential risk is that a queen bee leaves with a whole bunch of other bees and sets up a hive,” he said.
“We’re working with the Queensland government to do surveillance around the port to see if we can identify any other bees.
