THE Kikori Urban Basketball Association ended its inaugural season with former Papua New Guinea international Dia Muri officiating the men’s and women’s grand finals in Gulf on Sunday.
He told The National that the competition was an initiative of the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee’s Team PNG Heroes programme.
“We were here in October, running the programme in schools and sharing with them the Olympic values,” Muri said.
“I got in touch with the people and we decided to run a competition.
“I had the opportunity to launch the basketball competition here.
“Then the local communities took over with six men’s and women’s teams each.
“They had an enjoyable season.
“I was honoured to return and be part of their finals.
“The finals ended on high note and I’m really humbled to be here.
“It’s a privilege to help develop basketball in the rural areas of the country.
“They have a ground court and they still play even if rains.
“It’s really inspiring to see how passionate people are about playing the sport.”
Delta Kumuls claimed the men’s title with a 46-34 win over 48 Raiders while Medea Lakers were crowned winners in the women’s final following a 40-32 victory against Strikers.
Meanwhile, Muri said he would lead preparations for a side from the association to take part the national selection trials in Port Moresby this weekend.
