LAGAIP Poverty Relievers Association members in Enga have harvested 11ha of potato farms last week, its project programme coordinator Tony Sulipin says.
“They will continue to harvest the farms in Meapu village. We expect a total harvest of 20 tonnes of potatoes,” he added.
Sulupin said the project was funded by the European Union (EU) under its strengthening integrated sustainable landscape management projects in Enga, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Sulupin said the project was initially a seed multiplication initiative in response to the high demand for seeds.
“We now want to be a seed centre for Enga and the rest of the country,” he added.
He said hundreds of farmers would be trained on all aspects of potato farming techniques.
Sulupin said this would also help to encourage people to tap into small medium entrepreneurs (SME)’ businesses in the district.
He added that a potato mini harvest show would be held on June 13 to showcase the harvest potential and relevant stakeholders would be engaged for wider participation.
“This project aims to benefit about 10,000 people in the Pilikambi and Lagaip,” Sulupin said.
