Association hosts beach soccer in ESP

SEPIK Futsal Association hosted a beach soccer festival last Friday at Boikin outside Wewak, East Sepik, with more than 30 participants from children up to adults.
Association president Clarence Hukahu told The National that the initiative of beach soccer started in 2012 when chairman Kevin Mami organised a clinic on the basics of futsal.
“The introduction of futsal has proved successful in creating a pathway for Sepik players in the men’s and women’s National Soccer Leagues, so we are now tapping into beach soccer,” he said.
“Sepiks have been playing soccer for a long time.
“The growth of futsal has contributed almost 60 per cent of the men’s and women’s players in the Sepik club.
“If introduced, beach soccer would complement soccer and futsal, giving the club more options in recruitment.”
Hukahu said the association had introduced beach soccer to villages in Dagua earlier this month.
“Some of the participants were from Boikin and Karasau Island,” he said.
“It was a fun-filled festival with a good market avenue created for locals who attended and supported the participants.
“The association supported the festival with K700 worth of trophies and medals while the Sepik club provided logistics and manpower.
“It was a great achievement for the association.
“But we’re aiming to host a bigger and better event for futsal, soccer and beach soccer next year.”
