THE Sepik Futsal Association (SFA) is scheduled to host a futsal festival tomorrow at the Sir Michael Somare Stadium following a clean-up led by players from Women’s National Soccer League club Sepik.
SFA president Clarence Hukahu told The National that preparations for the festival were led by Nuigo Futsal Association chairman Anthony Yanguak.
He said it was part of their community obligation to give back to the community.
“We noticed that after the programme of the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare at the stadium, there needed to be some community service,” Hukahu said.
“So we decided to do a clean-up tomorrow especially around the stadium and the ablution facilities.
“After that, we’ll have a small futsal festival for Under-12 boys and girls as well as some potential players for our next campaign in the league.”
Hukahu said the festival was part of preparing the Nuigo association to kick off their season but more importantly, it was an initiative to engage youths in community service.
“While Covid-19 has restricted sports and other activities, our youths are getting involved in alcohol consumption and violence,” he said.
“This clean-up and festival is a way of getting them involved in something that will benefit the community.”
Meanwhile, Hukahu said there were plans to invite associations from Maprik, Ambunti Dreikikier and Wewak to a major festival in the East Sepik capital later in the year.
