THE Lae City PMV Association is trying to get PMV owners to register and operate together as a recognised organisation guided by the Land Transport Traffic regulations.
Issues of unroadworthy, unregistered and unclean vehicles, and incompletion of routes have prompted the revival of the association.
The association started five years ago and was registered with the Investment Promotion Authority (IPA), but it became inactive because of a lack of provincial government support.
Association chairman Samie Temiel said the provincial government, Land Transport and Traffic Registry, MP John Rosso and Metropolitan Commander Anthony Wagambie Jr supported the revival of the organisation.
Temiel said a survey of all PMVs is underway to ensure all vehicles providing services were registered with the association and the IPA.
The association will ensure that the vehicles are clean and roadworthy, with licensed drivers and crews with uniforms and bus stickers.
All PMV owners are being called to a meeting at the Niall Reserve, Eriku, today at 10am to get survey forms.
“The details will give us an idea on how to monitor and re-route buses with stickers and uniforms for drivers and crews to prevent illegal operations by highway buses,” Temiel said.
Association secretary James Kinjin said that in most cases drivers did not complete their routes but congested Eriku, town and Main Market.
“The problem is with us not being able to ensure that our drivers and crews are educated, ensuring their personal hygiene.”
