A TRAINING course for athletics officials in Kimbe, West New Britain, was held recently at the Muthuvel Stadium to help local officials coordinate athletic events in the province.
Two senior Athletics PNG officials — Phillip Kamane from the National Sports Institute (NSI) in Goroka and Lazarus Bureng from East New Britain — facilitated the Oceania Technical Officials Training Course last week ahead of athletic events in the province next month.
Secretariat coordinator for the West New Britain Sports Development Authority Nolene Pidik told The National yesterday that the main focus of the training was to teach local officials safety measures to conduct athletics competitions.
“We had about 20 local officials who attended the training course last week,” Pidik said. “The content of the training was to teach the officials on basic safety measures to conduct athletic competitions.
“It also covered the different events that are conducted during a competition including short, middle and long distance races as well as the different field events.
“It was a basic training course but an interesting and educational for the local officials.”
Meanwhile, Athletics PNG president Tony Green said they were still monitoring the new health measures hoping that it would not affect upcoming events.
