Atiyafa disgusted with filth in market

THE deplorable condition of Goroka Market has irked Henganofi MP and senior Eastern Highlands’ leader Robert Atiyafa.
Constitutional Law Reform Commission chairman Atiyafa walked around and saw for himself unhygienic sections of the market on Saturday.
These were riddled with rubbish, including animal and human waste.
He said mothers were selling fruits and fresh vegetables next to mud puddles with pigs and even cows around.
“When I went closer there were bad smells,” Atiyafa said.
“Where else can we go to buy fruits and vegetables? It is completely unhygienic and unfit for humans. Are we supposed to bring pigs and cows to town and live with them in town?
“If the owners are not prepared to fence their animals, I am putting up K1000 to help the owners to fence the animals.”
Atiyafa called on Goroka Town Authority to trace the owners of the pigs and cows and have them removed from main roads and markets.
He also expressed concern about the increasing number of people selling herbal medicine, PMV crews trying to forcefully get passengers and street preachers.
“Goroka town is now becoming a town full of herbal doctors selling medicine without any certification and license by authorities,” he said.
“They are claiming their products can solve health problems, but many of their patients end up in hospitals.”
Another area of concern to Atiyafa was the “K5 boss crews” who get K5 for every passenger they can deliver to a Highlands Highway PMV.
“We need to stop this practice, give freedom to passengers to decide which PMV bus they want to travel on,” Atiyafa said.
Street preachers, he added, were disturbing people in town on private businesses.
