Atiyafa slams locals charging fees on highway

HENGANOFI MP Robert Atiyafa has condemned the illegal blocking of roads by groups of people who then demanded money from motorists.
He told of how he had to pay groups of men stopping traffic
travelling around the Kama-Nagamiufa by-pass, and demanding money.
The damaged section of the Highlands Highway at Okiyufa had been undergoing repairs this week.
“I drove through more than 20 road-blocks set up by youths collecting between K5 and K10 per vehicle,” he said.
“At the last roadblock, I had no more K5 or K10, so I gave a K100 note.
“I strongly condemn the actions of these locals from Kama, Marasin Bridge and Nagamiufa villages.
“They should show some respect for people and vehicle owners travelling around the by-pass.”
Atiyafa said it was costly for PMV owners, trucking companies, private vehicle owners and the general public using the detour.
“Why is this happening? For me the Highlands Highway is not okay,” he said.
“I invite Works Minister Michael Nali and Works Secretary David Wereh to come to Goroka this week and see for themselves.”
He said trucks were stranded on both sides of the damaged section at Oiyufa Creek and passengers had to walk to catch PMVs on the other side.
Atiyafa said the Works Department should have repaired the damaged portion quickly.
Truck driver Silas Waro said bridges and culverts along the Highlands Highway built years ago were starting to crack.
“The culverts and bridges need immediate replacements,” he said
“My father was one of the first highway drivers and I have seen the same infrastructure since the highway was constructed.”
