Attacks unchristianlike: Bishop

National

BURNING church buildings gives an impression to the nation and the world that Papua New Guineans are not Christians even though they claim that over 90 per cent of the people are Christians, a church leader says.
Evangelical Lutheran Church of PNG head bishop Rev Dr Jack Urame, while condemning a report on youths burning two churches in West New Britain, described the act as totally irrational and senseless
“It is alarming to read the headline of churches being burnt down by youths in Gloucester,” Rev Urame said.
“Such attitude is totally unacceptable and I strongly condemn this act of arson by the youths.
“In view of the recent exercise of the government to declare PNG a Christian country by Constitution, it is very disgraceful when such actions happen among youths who call themselves Christians and community leaders are not doing anything to prevent such violence.
“PNG is a diverse nation with so many churches and sect groups operating in the country and by now we should know that there are different churches but the common factor is, all are preaching the word of God.”

  • Another popular but equally disparaging action is ‘church bashing’ by so-called street preachers. I have heard on numerous occasions people preaching ‘untruths’ about the Catholic and other mainstream churches. Most of what they preach is hearsay. Any prudent preacher ought to do due diligence and do some research into what they want to preach before they actually preach it.

  • Well, church burning is common in every part of PNG where government does not even look at the law and order issues. Given the situation, they (govt) must include a new law that guides all churches around PNG.
