THE St John Ambulance PNG will be supported by 65 Australian and New Zealand paramedics next week, according to Commissioner Matt Cannon.
They will assist their PNG counterparts in the provision of pre-hospital care and Cannon said it was an excellent example of regional partnership between PNG, Australia and New Zealand.
“The paramedics see themselves as part of a large international professional community in the Pacific region,” he said.
“This event is a great opportunity to strengthen working relationships and mutual learning between health professionals within our region at the frontline level.
“The St John Ambulance is providing service at all Apec venues as well as ensuring the community continues to get the same level of service as normal.
“These events are a challenge for ambulance services in any city throughout the world and it is common to seek assistance to manage the extra workload.”
The Australian and New Zealand governments provided funding to ensure St John PNG is well-resourced to perform its role next week.
St John PNG was engaged by the Apec Coordination Authority and the Joint Security Task Force to provide ambulance resources and health workers to provide high quality pre-hospital care services within the designated areas of the Apec Leaders’ Summit activity.
It will support other emergency and security services and maintain usual business operations during the event.
